Dwight A. Myers bka Heavy D was such an important and commonly forgotten figure in hip-hop. His records are all throughout my collection and always have been since I was a kid with a modest collection. From popular hits like “Now That We’ve Found Love” and “Is It Good To You” to “You Can’t See What I Can See” and “Here Comes The Heavster,” Hev always had the joints that fit perfectly with the present era of hip-hop without sounding forced and detached from who he was as an artist. His music did and will continue to have an impact on who I am as a person. Even though he was overweight, he remained a shining example of not being ashamed of who he was. He was so stylish and confident, he never occurred to most of us as a fat guy. He was just a talented MC, actor, writer, dancer, artist, and performer. The Heavy part, I think was important only as he made light of it with joints like “The Overweight Lover’s In The House” and “The Girls They Love Me.” My condolences go out to Pete Rock, Grap Luva and family as they are his cousins and I hope the world continues to share Hev’s music and reminisce about dancing to his tunes. One of my favorite Heavy D tunes showcased his ability to be lyrical, appeal to the streets and be positive without being corny. Don’t Curse is a song in which he invited, Kool G. Rap, Big Daddy Kane, C.L. Smooth, Q-Tip and more into the fold with a no swearing rule. Proof that Heavy D could make music us and our parents could get down to. Thanks for contributing to my childhood and my love of hip hop music Heavy. RIP Brother.
