WALNUT ROOM 5 Year Anniversary

Writing by Sonny James on Wednesday, 17 of March , 2010 at 1:37 pm

Okay, here’s where I make the request that you all be in the house. Starting this coming Sunday, we begin celebrating 5 years of The Walnut Room in Philadelphia all week. A bunch of special events are planned that are all gonna be bananas. Sunday night, I’ll be returning from SXSW to rock with Rich Medina, Questlove, and King Britt for Little Giant’s Birthday party. It’s been a while since we all played together in any city so I’m looking forward to this one. Next Saturday, DJ Tony Touch comes in from NYC to join me on the wheels to wrap up the entire week of festivities. Expect to sweat out every strand of hair on this night. Thanks for rocking with me this past year and change on Saturdays and for supporting a dope venue since it opened 5 years ago. This is our way of saying we appreciate your support. Rock on…

How Low Live…

Writing by Sonny James on Wednesday, 3 of March , 2010 at 12:07 pm

Sup y’all.

I promised to blog more this year. With being so busy in my real life, often my virtual life falls by the way-side. Thanks to all of you who have been checking out, downloading, and spreading the word about our 10 Years of Illvibe Mixtape. It is a trip down memory lane. A special shout out needs to be extended to Lee Jones for including the project as the 100th mix on the Sundae iPhone app. That was a big deal so thanks homie! Soon come the new projects.

One love to Fly Girrl, Laiya, and Afrodjiak for an awesome event the other night.  If you missed it, Black Thought from the Legendary Roots, sat down and opened up totally, discussing everything from how he got his start working underage at a pizza shop, to the untimely murder of both of his parents, to his lack of concern about The Roots’ music appearing on commercial radio. Very inspiring night and interview. Hopefully there will be a clip online sooner than later so I can share it with all of you who couldn’t be there.

Speaking of The Roots, I just found this clip of them performing with Ludacris on Jimmy Fallon. “How Low” is my ish right now and has been for months. Luda is one of the main artists right now that consistently causes me to pay attention to the south.

Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts

Writing by Sonny James on Tuesday, 2 of February , 2010 at 12:59 pm

This morning, I had the honor and pleasure of performing with an Ensemble from the Philadelphia Orchestra and Dave P at the Kimmel Center. The event was a press conference to announce the PIFA (Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts). It is scheduled to launch in April of 2011 and will feature music, dance, fashion, cuisine, poetry, fine arts, and more with a focus on Paris circa 1910-1920. This will be exciting for our city as there will be a ton of free events across the city during the 3 week run of the festival. Read more about PIFA Right Here.

Footage from the Press Conference will be uploaded later today and can also be seen on the evening news on both CBS and NBC.

All W-Rapped Up Tonight!

Writing by Sonny James on Friday, 25 of December , 2009 at 12:56 pm

Happy Holidays everyone. I hope you’re enjoying whatever it is you celebrate or just the day off from work. Tonight, witness me and my homie DJ Aktive (Skratch Makaniks, Mario, Kanye West) shred the turntables at Fluid Nightclub. Boombastics has been throwing a party every 3 months or so in Philly and they’ve been off the chain every time. Last time, Lil Mic from DC tore it down and this time, me and Aktive are back for that ill! Makaniks flavor.

WRapped up

Tomorrow night, we return to the Walnut Room for the weekly sweatbox. Over a year now and as we transition into 2010 and I reflect on all the good times of 2009, having the chance to rock with y’all every Saturday has been the highlight for sure. Thanks to Leah, Joe, Bashira, Montrel, and everyone else at WR for the good times, laughs, and to all of you for supporting. New Year’s Eve next week will be a great close to a solid year. Let’s get it.
