AFTERMATH vs OKAYPLAYER

Writing by Sonny James on Friday, 25 of September , 2009 at 11:53 am

Tonight we do it to death at Fluid. I’ve done many tribute parties but this one will be like no other tribute party I’ve done before. Me and DJ Aktive will be paying tribute to Aftermath Entertainment and Okayplayer. This means we’ll be playing select joints from The Roots, Common, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, Dilated Peoples, D’Angelo, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu and more. It’s going to be a fun night so come out if you’re in Philly.

Tomorrow is Philadelphia DJ Day (officially) so I’ll be looking forward to taking part in some of the related activities before heading to the Mandel Theatre for the annual Jam 4 Jess performance and after party.  Then it’s onto the Walnut Room for some more weekly foolishness.  I’m tired already.  See y’all out this weekend!

Rest In Peace Roc Raida

Writing by Sonny James on Monday, 21 of September , 2009 at 11:57 am

Another one of our fellow comrades has passed unfortunately. Roc Raida from the legendary X-Men DJ Crew (Harlem, NYC) passed away over the weekend. My recollections of him include seeing him live at the DMC multiple times. Performing on the same bill with him and chatting whenever the opportunity presented itself. If you’ve seen the movie Scratch, you’ve witnessed the magic this man worked on the turntables. If you’ve never seen or heard the X-Men, the video below is just a taste of what Roc Raida is all about. He lives on through the legacy of turntablism and DJs carrying the torch.

Rest In Power Homie. Too many losses this year. Damn…

Happy 18th Soul Ceez…

Check out some of the photos from the Soul Controllers 18th Anniversary party we had the pleasure of doing last week.  I wish y’all 18 more years of success and then some.  Audio posted below…

Z-Bar Tonight x Kanye West is not a Coon

*Sigh* I feel like a zombie as I type this.  Quite a week for the kid and I have so much more to do. One love to the Soul Controllers for having me and Lil’ Dave at their 18th Anniversary Party at Tabaq on Tuesday night in DC. So great to see my friends I haven’t seen in a minute. My cousin Debbie who I hadn’t seen in nearly 20 years even came out.  Crazy! Shout out to everyone who came out to APT on Wednesday as well.  Philly was up in there that night.  Other than that, it was a strange night.  I think some of the fashion week crowd stunk up the place during the earlier portion of the party.  Big up to Grand Puba, John Forte, Phillee Blunt, Mr. Len and others who were hanging while me & Akalepse got it together.

Tonight, I return to Z-Bar.  I spin house, broken, b-more, and some hip-hop too.  Always a good time when I rock there.  Come through if you’re in Philly. And of course tomorrow, it’s back to the Walnut Room.  Last week Lady Alma and company kilt it. Tomorrow, business as usual.

And off topic, I had to share this site.  It has some hilarious takes on Kanye’s VMA stunt the other night. I thought his interruption lacked taste and all but I don’t believe it was inexcusable so please stop it with the Kanye attacks.  He made a big mistake and apologized for it.  It’s a pain to go on Twitter and see people re-posting comments from idiots calling him racial slurs and saying he needs to be lynched with the other monkeys that don’t stay in line, etc.  How sadly typical that a black celebrity could be appreciated by such a wide audience but then persecuted and called a “coon” among other hideous and offensive names as soon as he does something folks disagree with.  No need to burn celebrities at the stake for not living up to our standards.  All of us are capable of making moves that others would disagree with. The only difference is, most of us “couch critics” will never do it in front of more than 100 people at any point in life. Now with that said, I gotta get up, get to the gym and get myself back in shape.  Afterall, critics are watching…

“Red Bull has challenged two of the top party producers and promoters in Philly to show us what they’ve got. These are the people that keep our city’s life exciting and fresh night in and day out. Each Promoter is working with the same tools; a club of their choice, a budget to be used at their discretion, and a DJ they book. Red Bull doesn’t ever like to cramp anyone’s style so whatever else they choose to do at the party is on the individual Promoter. The Promoter who produces the best party, picked by a panel of experts, will get a budget to make their dream event a reality in at the Red Bull Space, NYC.”
