In The Basement

Posted by Sonny James under New York, Philly

Whaddup Folks?  For those that haven’t checked, we have a new episode of ill! TV broadcasting live now.  The current show features DJ Excel of the Skratch Makaniks discussing his departure from Philly to LA, his reasons for leaving, the state of digital DJing now, and more.  Don’t miss it.  We’re growing with each episode. For all those that checked and gave feedback already, Thank you!

With BIG RICH

This past week I had the pleasure of rocking with my friend who’s like a big bro to me, Rich Medina in NYC at APT.  Lots of fun although the set was spur of the moment. Next time I do a real scheduled set, I’ll be sure to include you all in the fun in enough time for you to get there and check us.  Til then, check us in Philly this coming Thursday at Z-Bar w/ King & Doz.

Tonight I’ll be kicking it with my man Lil’ Dave at Xochitl at the Basement Soul weekly party.  Come through and get some latin tunes, $5 margaritas, and delicious food in ya lives.

Tomorrow I rock as per usual at The Walnut Room for our usual Saturday foolishness.  Don’t miss it.  We have a ball each week up in that place. Come early as it was outta hand at the door last week.

And here’s a lil treat for you who didn’t get this yet. As much as I’ve said things about Lil’ Wayne, I actually dug his verse on this remix for Q-Tip’s Renaissance Rap.

Peep here.

Phun in Philly

Outdoors

I’m glad there have been things to do in Philly lately.  I checked out Sammy Slice at the Walnut Room for the first time the other night and he killed it.  A great mix of tunes for the dancers and WR regulars to get down to.  Good Sunday jumpoff.  Shout out to Anwar who held down the mic all night too.  Yesterday I was in a shoot for a new video by Anu Sun which is being directed by Hezekiah.  The ideas Hez comes up with for these videos are outrageous.  He’s going to kill it with the proper budget.  Last night, Back 2 Basics was dope as usual.  King Britt, Dozia, and Ron Clark were in the pocket with the house classics and funk tunes.  Great to hear some joints I hadn’t heard in a longass time.  Speaking of which, We celebrate Doz’s birthday next Thursday at Z-Bar.  Dozia, King Britt, Rich Medina, and me will be holding down the turntables all night.  Be prepared to dance hard.  The address and other info is in my schedule  so take a peek.

My Dyno

Aside from nearly breaking my neck on my bike the other day, things have been good.  Teaching my kid how to do tricks after not riding a bike like this for years is risky business.  So risky that my kid had to take a deep breath and tell me “That was really a close call.” Lol I’m really good though, but busy as I’m currently wrapping up remixes for Hollyweerd and Killer Mike. More joints to come in the very near future.  More mixtapes too.  I just need to decide which joints I want to give away next. Stay wit me. More tings are gwan.

Holla

and Peep this video about the new North American Currency. Makes ya think…

Cold Sweat

So I decided to go out BMX riding with my kid this evening.  I knew it was gonna be a frigid ride and the downtown Philly breeze did not disappoint.  Part of me thought since it was such a beautiful day, it would be kind of comfortable chill, not like someone was putting ice cubes down my shorts.  Fun nonetheless.

Last night I went to say farewell to my man Excel of the Skratch Makaniks. If you haven’t heard, he’s taking off to LA for good.  I’d like to (pause) be right behind him, as cold as it is here.  Him, DJ Aktive, and Mike Boogie played the joints last night at Fluid and Smirnoff kept us swimming.  A good time overall.  Shout out to all of the Philly music royalty up in that place last night including Marsha, Gary O, Touchtone, and Hezekiah.

This Saturday we rock as usual at The Walnut Room and hope to see your butt in the place.  Please come through early to ensure entry.  Several weeks in a row, the door has been held due to capacity issues.  Holla at me when you get in the place as I’d like to meet all my regular readers. Thanks!

There have been many mixed reviews of NOTORIOUS but I really enjoyed it. If you haven’t checked for it yet, let me just say that the story is told very well and the actors played the hell outta their roles.  Speaking of BIG, DJ Graffiti has a new mixtape out with Astronote and Talib Kweli remixing a bunch of under the radar Biggie joints. I normally don’t check for recreated songs from deceased artists but these beats fit perfectly and (pause) bang superhard. The jawn features Guilty Simpson, Talib Kweli, Bahamadia, Busta Rhymes, and more.  Here’s a peak at the art below.  Cop immediately upon seeing it. In Fact, Eff it. Here’s a download link right here.

And finally, here’s some classic soul ish that took me back to my childhood. The joint right here.

HISTORY

I’ve been in and out of the house all day but I haven’t been able to get the sense of accomplishment and progress off of my heart. I don’t know if I can really state how I feel about Barack’s inauguration in a way that hasn’t been overstated all day long via Twitter, Facebook/CNN Chat, Myspace and whatever else has up to the minute updating capability. I will say that I am for the first time, really PROUD to be American. And of course I’m not sitting here thinking President Obama is Santi Clause and gonna travel around giving us all gifts in the ghetto or that Gas Prices will suddenly go down to 50¢ per gallon. But it is truly inspiring to see the good guy and girl win.  For a while I began feeling like many games in this country are only to be played by people who can play dirty and keep their own selfish values at the forefront of their intentions. This doesn’t seem to be the case at all here.  I’m looking forward to some of the progress we’ll be able to make in the months and years to come after this historical day.  I’m on daddy duty so unfortunately, I’m not out at any Inauguration Balls tonight in DC. I read about all the performances though on Twitter mobile so I feel like I saw it.

I did, however, see Mall Cop with my kid which was pretty good.  And I don’t think there was one swear in the whole movie. Sweet.

I’m in the midst of posting some tour dates for the Spring with Mr. Lif and crew promoting the new album “I Heard It Today.” Check the Schedule for the full details.  And check out Lif’s new song simply entitled Obama below.

Check y’all in a minute.
