DJs Galore!!!!!

Sheesh…

Philly DJ Day went very well. It was like dying and going to DJ Heaven. Everyone showed face from Mayor Nutter who used to DJ back in the day to the legendary cats like Jazzy Jeff, Rich Medina, Cash Money, and Too Tuff, to new up and comers like DJ Phsh, Ultraviolet, and Simplify to famous faces who regularly appear on MTV like DJ Drama, Questlove & Aktive. Basically, everyone you ever wanted to be mentioned in the same sentence with showed up that day with the exception of a small handful including DJ AM in which all of us hopes he recovers soon. I can’t wait to see how the images come out. It was mad fun! The afterparty went pretty well too aside from Excel and I having to argue with the management about the volume and having a proper DJ setup for a large portion of the night. And sorry to all the folks who wanted to get on but didn’t because the flow of the night was so crazy.

On another note, big up to Deesha and the Philadelphia City Paper for the awards this week. I think a “most slept on” award is a compliment. At least I’m taking it that way.

This weekend, you can catch me at The Canvas Clash @ Love Park, The Walnut Room, and Moe’s in Brooklyn. For days and times, check my schedule on Myspace.

Last, I’m so mad that I missed this event in New York a couple weeks ago. I had plans to go check Consequence and them at the Knitting Factory. Who knew Q-Tip would show up and do a bunch of Tribe classics as well as Kanye doing mad new stuff!?!?!?
Damn!

Jam 4 Jess This Weekend

Posted by Sonny James under Philly, Videos

The 5th Annual Jam for Jess is a family oriented dance performance to raise funds for The Jessica Karrat Dance Scholarship Fund. This year we will have performers from New York and Philadelphia who all donate their time and talent to our show. Some of the people performing this year are Caleaf, Aus Ninja from the House of Ninja, Ephrat, Tyrone Proctor, Amy Harding, Eng Matthews Dance Compnay, Face da Phlave, International Dance Crew, Bgirl Emiko and Vanessa, Delaware Valley Dance Academy.

The event is taking place at the Mandell Theatre at Drexel University tomorrow, Saturday, September 21, 2008 at 7pm, and I’ll be doing the Afterparty.

More Info Here

I went to check my mellow, DJ Phsh last night at the Bubble House (34th & Sansom). Dude was playing some joints! It’s not often that I find myself wanting to go to the DJ booth several times in a night to ask “What the eff was that?!??” Every Thursday for free, you can hear some feel good ish at no charge.

Mayor, Michael Nutter has declared Wednesday, September 24, 2008 as Philadelphia DJ Day. In celebration, we will be participating in a historical photo shoot capturing some of Philly’s finest on the wheels and of course an afterparty which will be bananas. More info on that early next week.

BTW, I’m Voting Republican…

A great Philadelphia moment happened this week as I went and checked Mike Nyce at Back 2 Basics the other night and he was rocking it! By the time, I come back to guest DJ in December, I’ll be all over my A Game. Believe that!
Inspiration

This weekend, I will be DJing the Jam for Jess event at the Mandel Theatre.
Then I’ll be headed to Atlanta to rock alongside Hezekiah, J-Live, and others. Right now I don’t have the venue info but I’ll post it as soon as I get it.

In other news related to Philadelphia, Cue Records, the “go to spot” for a bunch of us DJs and music lovers in the area, is closing after 10 years of business.
It’s a really sad reflection of the current state of the industry we were once proud to work in. I remember discovering Cue either the first or second week the shop was open. I found a copy of Daft Punk’s Homework album on wax and was instantly hooked on Cue as they had stuff I couldn’t find at 611 where I usually ended up looking at least once a week while DJing in college.

We will miss it but I’m sure Botany 500 will have another endeavor for us to enjoy in the near future. It will no doubt go on the list of other spots missed in Philly like Crimson Moon, Willamina’s, and Aqualounge. Philly, much like hip-hop, just ain’t what it used to be…

Weekend Recap

Posted by Sonny James under Philly

Okay, so today I headed out to grab some lunch from the trusty Vegetarian Chinese Jumpoff downtown and I don’t know whether it was the food digesting so rapidly, the long walk in today’s heat, or the workaholic weekend I had but before I knew it, I fell out on the couch for a nap my body forced me into. It was well needed. Then I went to FINALLY check the new Batman jawn on the IMax. Best Batman yet as everyone has told me. I’m haunted by The Joker.

Here are some pics to recap. Shout out to Nate for the invite to the Amble Gallery. I had fun and I hope Phsh did too although he didn’t get a chance to rock that long due to some wack circumstances.
The newly improved Walnut Room was real nice. I’ve been on the road since their renovations so I didn’t know what I was walking into. Nice work! And the crowd stayed moving all night. I’m now in talks to do something on the regular. Catch Skipmode and me soon rotating on Saturdays. More info coming soon.

More Mixtapes Soon…

For now, enjoy the pics.
