Yeah I know I’m sick. Yes, I know I should be in bed. But just because I know these things, doesn’t mean I’ll actually do what makes sense. I have deadlines to keep and by golly I intend to keep em. The drugs will get me through it.

Thanks to everyone who has checked on me and offered help. It means the world.

More mixtapes coming. I haven’t forgotten.

BTW, tomorrow’s NYC show with Hezekiah & Taylor McFerrin is cancelled due to venue issues.

speaking of which…

Peep the new Hezekiah teaser for his new record.

More than the flu

Posted by Sonny James under Travel

I’m back and unfortunately, accompanied by more than pictures and gifts. The cough that seemed to be bronchitis or the flu turned into what we now think is Pneumonia. I’ve been at the doctor all morning and now that I’m all doped up on steroids and antibiotics, there’s nothing left for me to do but blog about it. Ha!

My lady will be feeding me shortly so I’ll keep this simple and to the point. Below are some images from the highlights of our trip. Each photo was taken by Candace of Party People in Jo-Burg. Thanks for everything guys. We look forward to coming back again and again. Enjoy…

Rocking tonight in Jo-Burg

Posted by Sonny James under Travel

Man I’m sincerely over this throat bug I have. Hacking your lungs out minutes before you have to go on stage is corny as hell. And I’m sure everyone who attended the studio sessions that took place over the past couple of days is tired of hearing it. We did, however, get tons of work done for projects of artists out here as well as ours. Dope collaborations happening from SA to PA. Thanks but no thanks for the folks at Nike who wanted to give us clothing to wear at the Crazy 88 show just to sweat in them and hand them back the next day. People still borrow clothes? “Not I,” said the cat…
Most of what I have in my closet is fresher than what they had in the Be True store here so…

Well I began using the Video Scratch Live today. Shit was pretty nice. Especially since Kenzhero had all the fresh old school videos. Everything from Wrong Side of the Tracks to C.R.E.A.M. to Definition by Black Star. I can’t wait to break this in in front of an audience. What up RANE? Holla atcha boy on the demo tip. Y’all see me spinning my little heart out on the 56s and 57s across the globe.

Well we board a plane back to America tomorrow night and I must say with about an albums worth of beats done, several press opportunities maximized, collaborations in effect, and shows rocked, it was a productive trip. Very relaxing too since I didn’t have my phone ringing every five mins as my new blackberry is not working it’s magic on this side of the world. All is well. More hot ginger and lemon water coming…

Tea, don’t fail me now

Posted by Sonny James under Travel

The Oppi Koppi Festival went well although the dust was a bit much. Instead of mud, there was mad dry dirt in which I kept breathing in by accident. Fighting the Flu/Throat Infection now. It’s a lot colder here then I was prepared for. Bahamadia thought enough to bring her leather. I didn’t, however so I’m coughing and hacking all over the place. Part of it is that my sleep has been super sporadic. During the festival, we knocked out a bunch of TV/Magazine interviews and hosted a top ten video countdown. Sweet. We stayed on a wild life/game reservation near the festival which was in the middle of nowhere. After our 12am performance, we opted to stay up and have a home-cooked breakfast. When we walked into the guest house in which the food was being served, we were greeted by some young white South Africans who questioned our decision to wear scarves and jackets. They said it’s not that cold and shook their heads in disbelief. Strange that our attire affected them that much. Don’t think they were prepared to see black Americans that early in the morning. We grubbed and then took an 8am trip on the safari. It was basically some TV type shit. Giraffes, monkeys, rhino’s, zebras, and other animals were in the house. We had the nerve to get lost on this land in the woods at 4am. Not fun. I never realized how quickly I could panic if I thought me and my friends lives would be in danger. Bahamadia nearly had to slap me back to reality. It was fun staying there though. I left my deodorant at home. Dammit.

Yesterday I caught up on a few hours of sleep but still felt like crap. Made 6 beats and hung out with Candace, Kulu, and Dominique. Haven’t really seen Kenny since he’s been sick for a couple of days. We’ll hang today and hit up the museums. A much needed vacation from the U.S. if I must say so myself. They showed us these huge paintings someone did of all the artists who’ve performed at their event. They misplaced mine so I didn’t get a chance to sign it ☹. They did lace us with the exclusive “Party People” hoodies though. I’m suped. Our Mozambique show has unfortunately been cancelled due to civil unrest there. Maybe next time, we’ll get the chance to touch down there. Mad down time at the Villa in Jo-Burg. Thank God for Wax Poetics and MTV Base. We’re going into the studio with some of the local emcees and producers tomorrow and Thursday. I have some writing projects to finish in the process. I hate being sick… Did you know that raw garlic is a thug that fights germs? Me either but that is one of items Kat (my manager) has me on to get well.
