Mixtape Archive Post #2

Posted by Sonny James under Mixtapes

Whew…

It’s a labor of love I tell you!

My man Scipher came through last night with some more additions to the Illvibe Mix catalogue I forgot all about! Soon enough, you’ll have to get a new hard drive just for our mixes. No joke.

A little over a year ago, Mikesteady Adasko gave me a call from the Cornerstone office and said he had an insane deadline for this compilation him and OP! were working on for Smirnoff and wanted to know if I could lace it. I think originally OP! was the guy for this but had to run to South Africa for some DJ dates and to visit family. I also was leaving for tour the next day but I had an extra day that OP! didn’t so I jumped on it. Luckily I’ve learned to work well under pressure. I quickly mixed the songs Mike licensed and confidently handed it in. Mike absolutely hated it. I liked it but I’m glad I took Mike’s criticism because the order works way better on the final version of the CD.

Now you have it too.

Also check out the ill! Makaniks party tonight at The Barbary.
It will be worth the trip. Musically we go somewhere most do not!

THE MIXTAPES ARCHIVE Post #1

Posted by Sonny James under Mixtapes

This past week, I’ve been locked in the studio backing up dozens of mixtapes, radio shows and unreleased compilations. For the past 10 years or so, me and my famalam have been bringing you the best in quality music through events, mixtapes and radio shows. I’m working on so much new ish and while I was digging through piles of CDRs looking for old freestyles, etc., I realized that so much of my mixtape catalogue is in need of being reintroduced because lot of y’all don’t have it.

Here’s one that I know was never officially released. Basically, me and the Illvibe crew have been close friends with the guys from FORTILIVE for a few years now which is why I’ve featured them on my Handcrafted mix series and them keep them close for other opportunities. Slo-Mo gave me a collection of demo joints and freestyles a couple years back and I always wanted to do a mixtape featuring the material but held off since I was held up with other stuff. Then I finally got to mixing the joint and The Demolition Men from The Bay Area decided to do one too so the official release ended up being handled by them and mainly in stores on the West Coast. So big up to them for giving my mans mad exposure, and make sure y’all look out for the Fortilive album next year.
