In Honor of Ladies of Hip Hop Week

Posted by Sonny James under Artists

Thanks for returning to check the blog on the regular. Some of y’all may be familiar with my Handcrafted Mixtape series. I just revisited the CDs for the first time in a couple years and there were definitely some key joints on there. I love consistency between sequels so there were certain things I had to do on both Volumes I mixed. For one, my mellow Mushmouf had to bless both of them because in my opinion, he is one of the most slept on young cats in the game who, once provided the opportunity, will make a serious impact globally. I also kept the drops from Dinae the same in addition to keeping the sound somewhat the same. One person besides Mushmouf who had to appear on both volumes is Invincible. I first met Invincible in passing when I was in Detroit for the Electronic Music Festival a few years ago when Ropeadope released The Detroit Experiment album. The absolute standout track on that project, was the jam she appeared on which was only released on CD unfortunately. I’ve been a fan since hearing of her with The Anomolies a while before that release but never fully grasped how much potential she had. I then got a chance to get to know her better on The Sistaz In Rhyme Tour last winter in Europe. She blew me away with her courage to tackle serious issues and do it in a way that made even less “conscious” folks in the crowd speechless at her confidence and breath control. She’s a dope artist but even doper human being. I could see why all of the most respected people in the business hold her in a high regard.

You should too. Don’t sleep, her debut album Shapeshifters is downright retarded. LISTEN AND BUY HERE!

Peace and keep supporting

FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND

Posted by Sonny James under Press, Videos

So the weekend is upon us. And a fun filled weekend it should be. Between Ali Shaheed Muhammad at Fluid, Marques Wyatt at Cielo, and Janelle Monae at World Cafe, I’ll have my hands full the entire next three nights.

One love to Dres from Black Sheep, Oddisee, Hezekiah, Spinna, and all the folks who came to see us rock the other night in New York. It was quite a lineup and honor to be rocking alongside some legends in the game. Later that night we headed over to APT to visit Rich Medina and the energy in the room was amazing as Mos Def was in the booth acting a fool on the mic. I miss that side of him. He was killing the freestyle. I love moments like that. That is, the ones that make me forget about Lil Wayne…

I’m a hater yes…

Anyway, the homie Deesha over a Geoclan put together a Father’s Day Special and reached out to me for my input. One love to her and you can check it out at this link:::

FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL

Have a good weekend and be safe out there in the heat…

Oh! and speaking of Mos, watch this and love hip hop again.

Graduation…

Posted by Sonny James under Dropping Science, Videos

So I went to my niece’s graduation tonight and although I was so moved by all of her accomplishments, it was extremely hard to stay in the moment because of how many people there behaved like they had no home training. I mean why does 90% of my black people in the building need to scream and act a fool throughout the entire ceremony??? It began with dozens of people showing up mad late (some almost an hour late, mind you) and still going right to the front row to try to take reserved seats while people are either away at the bathroom or just not there yet themselves. Then it amazes me how people can already be significantly late to an event but still get an attitude when they find out first, second, or third row seats are no longer available. Then even though the senior class took their seats at 7pm, people still find it important to yell “Go head Kiki!!!!” or “Okay Dre, I SEE YOU CANNON!” during the teachers’ speeches at 7:45. Then not to mention that the majority of the class acted a fool during their own commencement. Some of which were turned around in their seats on cell phones while their elders attempted to give them well needed advice to take with them to college, vocational schools, or even just the jobs at Wendy’s they’ll be jumping into once this summer ends. I was truly exhausted after over an hour and a half of having people scream in my ear at their nephew “Ray Ray” who crip walked across the stage to get his diploma and their niece, “Shaquana” who nearly fell down the steps after shaking hands with the principal because she was wearing pumps that made me and most of the men in the place around the age of 30 consider doing something nasty with an 18 year old.

All this I say not to offend people but to really just express how our people truly need to do better. It’s such a challenge trying to enjoy celebrating all my niece or nephew’s hard work during their years of patience and hard work while my family and I are surrounded by ignorant people. All I can say is, I’m so proud of them for their good grades and awards but also glad that I’m done with high school. I can’t imagine being that age with things they way they are now…

Now that I officially feel old as hell, take a look at this and tell me he’s not overrated…

SERIOUSLY Folks! I don’t get it. Why are you saying he’s the greatest alive!??!!?!???!?

Wake up! And on that note, more tomorrow…
