The Straight Up Truth

Posted by Sonny James under Dropping Science

Please excuse my cynicism but having sat through months of people fronting, companies acting as though my value isn’t what it is, and canceled opportunities, I’ll now say it.

Guys, I have news for you.

The music business is bullshit.

It’s an illusion of fame and fortune that is so seldom achieved, the stories of success that we hear so are so outrageous because they happen about as often as people win the big lottery which is about as often as people get struck by lightning. What do I mean? I’m saying, that you have a better chance at getting struck by lightning then you do of making it big in the music business. And in this day and age, you’d most likely be more famous for getting struck by lightning than you would for making music.

It’s true.

The market has been over saturated for years with all types of folks willing to give it the old college try. People willing to do anything to get noticed on a blog, tv, radio, a newspaper, whatever. It’s embarrassing to watch. A lot of us do this for the cash. A few of us do this for the love. An even fewer amount of us do this for both. I think most of us have been unrealistically believing the two work together.

If you’re trying to make it independently as a musician, get a fucking job because being poor and struggling is not synonymous with art! And it is a mind numbing, migraine inducing, debilitating and humiliating experience dealing with people in position who want you to believe that somehow, it is! The folks who are playing roles that fall outside the artistic realm are the ones making the dollars anyway.

So if you’re young and trying to get into the industry, put your rhyme book away because nobody cares. (See any of the top 5 schmucks on the radio for proof) If you’re going to learn to DJ, you also better learn how to get good at sucking weenies too because that’s a a main duty involved in the job these days. Producers too.

Wanna make a buck? Go into the non-artistic side or else, be treated like a dog scrounging for scraps. Unless you’re young and good looking, a politician, as patient as those guys in the bible, willing to do anything regardless of how much integrity it lacks, and extremely lucky! In which case, I’ll see you on TV…

Otherwise, if you’re relying on your talent, see you in the welfare line.

See this movie for more on this topic…
